Traditionally spring cleaning is carried out in middle to late March, however we have recently had a lot of snow, so it may be an idea to bring this forward, and this is why.

The snow caused a lot of grit and salt to be laid down, this can attatch itself to your shoes and then transfer to a carpet, causing the carpet to become discoloured and in extreme cases even rot away, a deep soil extraction clean from us will remove this.

Also in snow, however careful you are, some of the snow ends up on a carpet, which then makes the carpet wet, which can cause dirt to be attracted quickly to the carpet, a normal carpet can hold up to a pound of dirt per square foot, so even if it does not look dirty, you carpet could be holding a lot of dirt which can end up causing excess wear.

A carpet can be an expensive item to replace, so having a regular clean can be very cost effective, and if you use our carpet protection process, this can help your carpet remain in good order for much longer.

For the second year running we have seen an upsurge in the problem of carpet moths, these moths are closely related to the clothing moth.

They have become prevalent because more and more homes have become centrally heated, and the carpet moth thrives in the heat and the dark, they usually strike in the darkest areas of a room, underneath bookcases, pianos, sofas, even tables, anywhere there isn’t natural sunlight.

Signs you have the moth are worn carpets in these areas, bare carpets, and sometimes even an actual moth or two present, they soon go if you air the room on a freezing day, but this is not an ideal solution.

If left the moth will eventually drift into the main areas of your carpet, as they will have literally eaten the carpet in the dark areas, so it is worth checking regularly to see if any are present.

If you do find you have a carpet moth, and if the damage is not too bad, we can treat this with no bad effects upon pets, children, or anyone with a respiratory disorder, the treatment is much the same as the treatment of fleas on carpets, and in involves a wet deep soil extraction clean of all the carpets, using in the water added insecticide, which is proven to neutralise the carpet moth, the time you have to keep away from the carpet is simply ten minutes from the time it is finished, and then, apart from drying time, the carpet is good to go, and it is guaranteed to be free of carpet moths for a year. The cost is not as much as you would think, it is on average 10% more than the usual deep soil extraction clean, and it can work out cheaper than getting a pest control company in, and as a bonus, you also get clean carpets.

I am always happy to answer any carpet cleaning query you have, and I carry out carpet cleaning in Suffolk, Essex, and further if needed.

Luke

Information about the treatment of these carpet moths will be posted in the news section of the website, but it is worth checking your home for the signs of a carpet moth, which are bare patches in dark areas, mysterious wear patterns, and in extreme cases, actual carpet moths themselves, they do seem more prevalent during the dark months of winter.

We currently have in stock some excellent prochem stain removal kits, that we are happy to sell to you, and we are currently awaiting delivery of a tried and tested kit from staingard which are good for removing stains yourselves.

We have a lot of customers who call us out to remove a stain after treating it themselves with a shop bought product, this can have the effect of setting the stain, making it a permanent fixture on your carpets, some of these shop bought products have a whitening product or bleach in them, so in extreme cases eventually the stained area can rot away, not good.

We are always available to offer free advice on stain removal if needed

With the winter fast approaching and rumours of snow again and a hard winter again this year, I thought it was time to give some tips on carpet care over winter.

I encourage all my customers to wipe their feet before going inside, as a wet carpet always attracts more dirt, and can cause a carpet to wear quite quickly, however with the snow comes other issues, once there is snow or ice on the ground salt and grit tends to get laid on pathways and roads, and more recently people are buying their own grit or salt to lay down.

The road grit and some shop bought de icing products can cause a carpet literally to rot away, as the additives that cause the ice to melt away also cause carpets to rot away, as the snow can get onto your carpet mixed with the salt, and then when it dries, it rots the pile away from a carpet.

The only solution is to take your shoes off before you enter a home, preferably this would happen on a door mat, I can advise if needed the best type to get for winter.

This year I have had a few offices and one school that have had this problem, the school was especially bad, as the salt discolured the carpet badly, clearly in the enviroment of an office, shop or school it is impossible to have everyone take their shoes off, however a sign asking everyone to wip their feet will help.

We can also offer advice on what type of mat to buy for placing by the door in the winter season and also supply this if needed, the typical cost for a domestic mat is £15, the cost for an office or school starts at £50, a small price to pay when it protects a carpet worth at times many hundreds of pounds.

The modern laminate floor can also suffer from the same rotting and discolouration, as it is worth investing in a mat even if you do not have carpets.

And lastly of course, if you do end up having a discoloured carpet due to salt, get in touch, as we we should be able to help, as here at L and K Hygiene we pride ourselves on the fact that if we cant remove a stain, no one can!!

Here at L and K Hygiene we are committed to being as enviromentally friendly as we can, due to our committment to quality, we regularly turn our stock round, which has meant occasionally we see some waste chemical coming through, although this is not much, as we run a good stock ordering system, however it is inenvitable that we would have some wastage, we have this week appointed a disposal agent to help us dispose of safely any waste chemicals we may have, this is guaranteed to not impact on the enviroment in any way.

Along the same lines, we also have been asked a lot lately to carry out exterior and interior painting works, we aspire to and acheive excellence in this service, the same as all our services, we also tend to use brushes of a good quality, as this helps us to get a better result, usually we will be painting a house or offices with brushes costing about £10 each, so clearly we cannot change them every few days like you could with a cheaper brush, this has caused us to use a lot of white spirit lately, I think we have spent about £30 on white spirit so far this year, which is about 12 liters of the stuff, I was getting bothered by the cost and even more bothered by the enviromental impact of this.

I investigated and found a box called a brush mate, which keeps the brushes in useable condition without the need for spirit, the box is a sealed box with a vapour pad at the bottom which releases vapour, keeping the brushes useable, once the vapour pad dries, it is recyclable and harmless to the enviroment, the cost of the brush mate was £15, the pads last about 6 months, and cost £5, so it will pay for itself, whilst helping us to acheive our goal of caring for the world we live in.
